Dior, Ariana Grande, and Cultural Appropriation: What Were They Thinking?

Written by Greg Petro | Sep 6, 2019

America seems to have jumped the shark when it comes to the intersection of fashion and identity politics.

All in one week, Dior (DIO.F) and Johnny Depp managed to offend Native Americans in an epic fail for its fragrance Sauvage, and Ariana Grande found herself accused of stealing fashion ideas from both queer culture (a drag queen, specifically) and from black women. It’s a fashion minefield out there!

These dramas over cultural appropriation may seem trivial or irrelevant to many consumers, but the fact that authenticity matters so much today may be a hopeful sign for the future. It squares with the resurgence of the Levi’s brand. Younger generations are hungry for integrity.
