First Insight has appointed Jim Gruskin as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding founder Greg Petro as the Pittsburgh-based predictive intelligence company looks to scale its AI-driven platform and expand across consumer-facing industries.

Gruskin brings three decades of experience across technology, finance and investing. His mandate will include scaling First Insight’s technology, expanding its market reach and integrating its predictive capabilities more deeply into product development, pricing, assortment and go-to-market workflows.

First Insight combines direct consumer feedback with proprietary machine-learning models to predict demand, willingness to pay and likely customer choices before companies commit significant capital. The platform is designed to give businesses forward-looking information for decisions that historical sales data cannot address, particularly when evaluating products or concepts that have not yet reached the market.

That capability has become increasingly relevant as generative AI allows companies to create and iterate on more products, designs, offers and marketing concepts. While those systems can accelerate creation, they do not independently establish whether customers will buy a product or how much they will pay. First Insight positions its platform as a validation layer between concept generation and commercial deployment.

The operating implications include decisions around development spending, inventory, pricing and marketing. Companies can test potential offerings against consumer feedback before committing resources, providing an opportunity to modify or abandon weaker concepts earlier in the process.

“Our next chapter is about building on what our customers already rely on, making that intelligence easier to use and bringing it into the workflows where consequential decisions are made,” Gruskin said. He added that stronger demand signals can support investment decisions, while weaker consumer responses can give companies an opportunity to change direction before development, inventory or marketing spending is locked in.

First Insight assigns products and concepts a proprietary Value Score rating based on customer demand, willingness to pay and sentiment. Businesses use the output to compare opportunities, identify weaker propositions and determine whether product or pricing changes could improve expected customer response.

Customers include Under Armour, Boden and Family Dollar, which use First Insight across areas including strategy, innovation, product development, pricing, assortment planning and go-to-market execution.

Gruskin previously led Global Knowledge, a technology training company, and served on the executive team of parent company Skillsoft, where he helped complete three strategic transactions. He has also held senior strategy and finance roles at Dex One, worked as a media and technology investment banker at Morgan Stanley and served as an investor at Prudential Capital.

Across his career as an executive, banker and investor, Gruskin has participated in more than 60 transactions totaling over $100 billion.

“What attracted me to First Insight was not simply its technology,” Gruskin said. He pointed to the company’s combination of nearly two decades of predictive modeling, direct consumer feedback and experience applying those signals to corporate investment decisions.

First Insight has established its deepest presence in retail, particularly apparel and footwear, but has also worked with companies in grocery, consumer packaged goods, beauty, pet products, home goods, hospitality and consumer electronics.

The company serves enterprise customers across North America, Europe, Australia and Latin America, with a U.K.-based team supporting European clients. A recent partnership with Mexican department store operator Grupo Coppel marked an expansion of First Insight’s operations into Latin America.

Founded in 2007, First Insight has worked with thousands of businesses worldwide. Its consumer network spans 180 countries and supports 69 language and currency combinations.

Gruskin holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the University of Chicago. His appointment shifts First Insight into its next leadership phase with a focus on scaling the platform as companies seek to connect AI-enabled product creation with evidence about what customers are actually likely to buy.
